Manchester United continued to show improvement in their opening game of the Premier League season, as Bruno Fernandes scored a goal that assisted Erik ten Hag.
The hosts dominated in the first half, but their efforts were wasted as they went into halftime with nothing to show for them. Despite a frustrating first half, the second one yielded better results, as Fernandes scored a goal.
United’s 2nd victory in a row, with 3 points in 4 games, has brought them to 6th place in the league for now.
This game marks the first time in a while that Manchester United has been able to win back-to-back league matches.
“We knew this coming into Southampton, it’s not going to be easy. We already know that these games are tough. Sometimes you have to work through suffering.” Fernandes said after the victory.
One win or two wins don’t make the league. After Liverpool everyone could feel it. We set the standard so we have to carry on now and if we can, try to improve it.
“We want every home game to be a win, and this is what we come here for.”
Ronaldo, who did not start in the game versus PSG, came on in the 68th minute to replace Sancho. This is Ronaldo’s third season playing for United and his ninth overall. He has been with the club since 2003 and is one of the most accomplished players to have ever played for this team.
The United manager said his side could have created more chances at the start of the game, but he is happy with their overall performance.
“Players learned some lessons from Brentford and were more compact. The goal we created, we could have made more”, Ten Hag said.
The Spurs contained their opponents in the second half, creating three high-quality scoring opportunities.

After their victory against Liverpool, the United team should have scored in the 19th minute. The pitch was lead by Gavin Bazunu and Armel Bella-Kotchap who rejected Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen from close range.
Despite dominating the ball in the second half, West Bromwich Albion was unable to find an equalizer because United’s keeper David de Gea kept their chances out.
The best chance of Southampton during the match came in the last seconds. Sékou Mara’s bicycle kick cleared by Dalot.
Today, after the game, Ralph Hasenhuttl expressed pride in his team’s performance.
“I am very proud of the guys today. They did an incredible job from the first minute. We had good moments and plenty of chances, we really stretched them. We deserved more but sometimes football is just like that.”
